Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island Immigration Museum
Liberty Island, NY
Ellis Island, NJ
The Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island Immigration Museum receive well over 4 million visitors annually. People from around the globe sojourn to this World Heritage Site to experience firsthand, the majestic site of the Statue's 151 foot high torch of freedom and the humbling halls of Ellis Island, where 12 million immigrants were processed between 1892-1954. The significance of these two diminutive islands to the world's populace can never be overstated.

On February 3, 1997, Band, Inc. received Notice to Proceed from The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation with the design and fabrication of UV filtered, fiber optic systems for (7) display cases (5) on Ellis Island and (2) on Liberty Island. All of the display cases at Ellis Island and Liberty Island had been originally designed and fitted with fluorescent lamps. Due to the extremely high ultraviolet (UV) radiation output and the poor color rendition of these light sources, it was imperative for the museum's artifacts' preservation and presentation that they be replaced with fiber optic lighting. This posed several challenges. First, since the cases' dimensions had been based on the long, narrow profiles of fluorescent bulbs, no room had been provided for any future alternative lighting systems. Second, due to the permanent structural nature of the cases themselves, and the inability to modify them, (the museum forbade case renovation), the interior case lighting had to be remarkably compact (to be hidden from plain view) and uniform (to provide even illumination over all display surfaces).

To achieve these objectives, Band, Inc. designed and installed a variety of miniaturized, adjustable and focusable mirrored lens assemblies in precise case interior locations verified in the field. The resulting improvement in light quality was truly astonishing.
